The Global Merchant Lending (GML) team is responsible for building PayPal’s Working Capital and Business Loan products that have already originated more than $15 Billion in funding to over 300,000 businesses. We call it “Dream Fuel”. GML products give businesses access to the capital they need, but faster and easier than traditional loans. The impact we have on our customers’ businesses is what drives us to innovate.

As a Sr. Software Engineer you will create and lead others to create software that brings our business lending platform to the next level. You must be able to thrive and succeed in an entrepreneurial environment that is within a matrixed big company organization, and not be hindered by ambiguity or multiple competing priorities. You will lead engineers by example and collaborate with stakeholders to build the mission critical systems that provide working capital for PayPal merchants around the world.

This includes everything from the frontend through the backend. You will work with a team of highly collaborative Engineers following team-defined standards and practices in an Agile environment. As part of the team you will create, test, and deploy these software experiences. At the beginning of the week there is sprint planning where we all talk through the work and estimate the amount we can accomplish in a sprint. During the week work is accomplished through individually picking up tasks, writing code, reviewing each other’s code, and preparing it for a release. This includes coordinating with QA engineers to ensure work is well written and well tested before going live.

The successful candidate will perform the following activities:

Develop, grow, and lead part of our high-performing software engineering organization, and be a hands-on technology expert.
Use software development tools, techniques, and processes to design, develop and deliver robust software.
Use Agile/Scrum methodology along with waterfall/SDLC techniques to ensure that projects are completed in alignment with scope and schedule.
Enable and empower teams to build and deploy high-quality software on a regular and frequent basis.
Ensure appropriate design, implementation, testing, delivery, and support of our systems.
Drive a culture of obsession around customer focus and delivering a great online customer experience.
Be an evangelist and driver for technology innovations.
Use data to make decisions and help others to do the same.
Communicate clearly with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
Facilitate fun team building activities that re-enforce our culture.
Travel a couple times each year to PayPal offices in the US.

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related major

10+ years of Java back end development experience including familiarity with Java 8 features

2+ years of experience leading a team of developers
3+ years of experience designing, developing, and testing RESTful APIs
Experience with common Java APIs and frameworks including JAX-RS, Hibernate, JPA and JMS is preferred
3+ years of experience with Spring Boot and Spring Framework
Experience making high level design/architecture decisions and knowledge of common design patterns
Experience mentoring and leading developers on a team to increase team output and build future talent
Experience with project optimization and developer capacity planning to ensure projects are delivered on schedule
High accountability around software ownership including long-term architecture, hygiene, SDLC process, quality, and technical debt
Understand the concepts around concurrency and transactions
Experience working with SQL databases
Experience with test frameworks such as TestNG, Mockito, WireMock
Experience with Maven or other build tools is a bonus
Understanding of Continuous Delivery concepts
Strong programming fundamentals and analytical skills
Sharp learning curve and open to learn/work in new technologies
Experience with application profiling and tuning
Good communication and team building skills
Basic knowledge of web application servers
